It's so dark and quiet here, in a remote place by the sea, that I instinctively begin to feel like I've moved to another timezone, half a globe away, and that my family at home is currently finishing breakfast and preparing to go away into the street brightly lit with sunshine.
There's no moon or stars, only a dim glow of the village 3km away to the south. There's no wind, and so no usual hushing sound comes from the sea across the road. A dog is barking in the forest, where new plots of land were cleared last year. There must be some guards there, slowly and patiently drinking the winter away, in the same way as I do, but more skilfully.
